SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT OF A COMMON BILE DUCT STONE USING ENDOSCOPIC RETROGRADE CHOLANGIOPANCREATOGRAPHY (ERCP)

Recently, Tam Tri Nha Trang General Hospital successfully treated a 66-year-old foreign patient with a common bile duct (CBD) stone using Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The patient was admitted with abdominal pain, nausea, jaundice, and scleral icterus.

Following a comprehensive clinical evaluation and appropriate diagnostic investigations, the medical team diagnosed a distal common bile duct stone associated with biliary dilatation measuring approximately 12 mm. After multidisciplinary consultation, the team elected to perform ERCP as the definitive therapeutic intervention.

During the procedure, the endoscopy team identified biliary sludge and dark green-black bile within the biliary tree. Endoscopic papillary balloon dilation was performed, followed by successful stone extraction and biliary irrigation, resulting in complete clearance of the bile duct. The patient remained clinically stable after the procedure, recovered uneventfully, and was discharged after three days of hospitalization.

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a minimally invasive advanced therapeutic endoscopic procedure widely used for the diagnosis and management of pancreatobiliary diseases. ERCP enables effective treatment of various biliary and pancreatic disorders without the need for open surgery, thereby reducing postoperative pain, shortening recovery time, and minimizing the risk of complications.

CA_ERCP_1CA_ERCP_2The successful implementation of ERCP at Tam Tri Nha Trang General Hospital provides patients with biliary and pancreatic disorders access to a modern, minimally invasive, and highly effective treatment option, delivered by an experienced multidisciplinary team and supported by advanced endoscopic technology.
