WORLD RABIES DAY – SEPTEMBER 28

Rabies is a serious and life-threatening infectious disease caused by the rabies virus. It is transmitted from animals to humans and primarily affects the nervous system. Once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal.

The virus is mainly transmitted through the bite, scratch, or lick of an infected animal, particularly when saliva comes into contact with broken skin or mucous membranes. Dogs and cats are among the most common sources of human rabies exposure.

 To protect yourself, your family, and the community, health authorities recommend:

1. Vaccinate dogs and cats
Regular vaccination of pets is one of the most effective measures to prevent the spread of rabies.

2. Properly clean the wound
Immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, then disinfect with 70% alcohol, iodine alcohol, or povidone-iodine.

3. Seek medical attention promptly
Go to a healthcare facility as soon as possible for professional assessment, advice, and timely rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) when indicated.

September 28 is an opportunity to raise awareness and encourage action toward the goal of rabies elimination.
