CHEST PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR CHILDREN – CLEARING AIRWAYS AND RELIEVING WHEEZING

When children have difficulty sleeping, vomiting, breathing difficulties, wheezing, or excessive phlegm, mucus buildup in the nose, throat, and lungs may be contributing factors. Parents naturally want to find ways to help clear the mucus quickly so their little ones can breathe more comfortably.

Respiratory physiotherapy, also known as chest percussion and vibration therapy, involves several techniques, including:
- Nasopharyngeal clearance using saline solution.
- Cough stimulation.
- Techniques to help mobilize and clear mucus from the trachea and bronchi.

These techniques help loosen and remove accumulated mucus in the airways, making it easier for children to breathe, relieving wheezing, and supporting the treatment of pneumonia.

Chest physiotherapy may also be used in the management of certain respiratory conditions, such as nasal congestion, bronchiolitis, and bronchitis, which can cause mucus buildup and airway obstruction in children.

Important note: Chest percussion and vibration therapy should only be performed in hospitals, following a doctor's prescription and under the supervision of qualified healthcare professionals.

At Tam Tri Nha Trang General Hospital, pediatric respiratory physiotherapy is performed by the Traditional Medicine and Rehabilitation Department in coordination with the Pediatrics Department.
