WHEN IS A TONSILLECTOMY NECESSARY?

 Tonsillitis can cause a high fever, swollen tonsils, and a sore throat, which may obstruct the airway and digestive tract, significantly affecting a person's quality of life.
A tonsillectomy may be necessary in cases such as enlarged tonsils, recurrent tonsillitis, or tonsillitis with complications. The procedure helps relieve airway obstruction, reduce the recurrence of upper respiratory tract infections and middle ear infections, eliminate bad breath caused by chronic tonsillitis, and improve both breathing and swallowing.

 When should you consider a tonsillectomy?

- Recurrent tonsillitis (more than 4 episodes per year)
- Enlarged tonsils causing difficulty swallowing, a sensation of something stuck in the throat, snoring, or obstructive sleep apnea.
- Tonsillitis with complications such as a tonsillar abscess, middle ear infection, sinusitis, or more serious complications including rheumatic heart disease, arthritis, or glomerulonephritis.

 Before a Tonsillectomy
* Please fast for at least 6 hours before your examination or surgery. Morning appointments are recommended.

After a Tonsillectomy
* Eat soft, cool foods.
* Avoid hard, spicy, sour, or hot foods.
* Limit the use of antiseptic mouthwash, as it may increase the risk of bleeding.
** Between 7–10 days after surgery, the healing membrane (scab) naturally separates, which is the period with the highest risk of bleeding. Patients should return to the hospital for a follow-up examination so the doctor can assess healing and provide timely treatment if necessary.
