Recently, Tam Tri Nha Trang General Hospital has received an increasing number of children infected with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), particularly infants under 6 months old. Some severe cases have required mechanical ventilation.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common cause of respiratory infections in children, including nasopharyngitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia, especially in children under 2 years of age. The disease can become severe in:

• Infants under 6 months old

• Children with underlying medical conditions or congenital heart disease

• Premature or low-birth-weight infants

• Children with weakened immune systems

RSV infections tend to increase during seasonal transitions, such as autumn–winter or spring–summer. The virus spreads easily through respiratory droplets and secretions during close contact, kissing, cuddling, or direct conversation with an infected person.

In the early stages, RSV may cause flu-like symptoms such as cough, runny nose, sneezing, fever, and wheezing. However, the condition can progress rapidly and become severe, with warning signs including rapid breathing, difficulty breathing, poor feeding or refusal to feed, and excessive fussiness.

RSV infection can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, otitis media, and recurrent wheezing or asthma.

Therefore, if your child develops symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, or wheezing, parents should take the child to a healthcare facility promptly for proper diagnosis and timely treatment.
